Former Liverpool striker Robbie Fowler has explained why Jurgen Klopp turned down a managerial role at Manchester United.
Klopp excelled with Borussia Dortmund in the Bundesliga, lifting the league title twice and guiding the club to the Champions League final, and has achieved similar success on Merseyside - the highlight being last season's Champions League triumph.
It could have all been different for Klopp, though, as he revealed last year that he turned down the advances of Manchester United before moving to Anfield.
United approached Klopp prior to the appointment of Louis Van Gaal in 2014/15, he revealed to Sky Sports, but stated it "never felt right".
"Yes, there was interest - Manchester United, yes, they were interested a year or a year and a half before, but it didn't feel right.
"I couldn't say Man United is not my club, it didn't feel right."
Now, former Reds striker Fowler has explained the reasons behind Klopp's decision - adding that he also spurned the advances of Real Madrid at a similar time.
"I did an interview with him a couple of years ago and he told me he turned down a couple of super-rich clubs after Dortmund," he wrote in the Mirror.
"One of them was definitely Manchester United, the other probably Real Madrid – because he hated how they were focused solely on commercial influences.
"He said he liked Liverpool because they had a balance between the money needed to reach the top and the history and identity of the club and their fans."
