Why Jurgen Klopp questioned Lionel Messi after first leg against Liverpool

Jurgen Klopp says he was left asking Lionel Messi why he'd done what he just did after the Argentinean's late heroics changed Liverpool's Champions League semi-final against Barcelona .

The Reds played well in the first leg of the tie in Catalonia, but were a goal down to a Luis Suarez strike going into the final 15 minutes.

And it was then that Messi struck twice - the second from a glorious free-kick - to give Barca a 3-0 advantage to take to Liverpool for the second leg on Tuesday.

As if the Reds' task wasn't already hard enough, Klopp has confirmed that his side will be without forwards Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino for the second leg, with the Egyptian unavailable after suffering a concussion in the weekend win over Newcastle .

Klopp congratulated Messi at full-time was asked what he said to Barca's No.10 at Monday's press conference .

“I don’t know if I said something, really,” he said.

“At that moment, I might have said ‘why did you do that?!’”

Klopp admits that his side are hugely up against it at Anfield, but they retain hope of a miracle.

“There’s hope and it’s football," he said.

Brendan Rodgers tells Pep Guardiola why he should be fearful of Leicester

“We are not in a situation where we say it will happen 100 per cent but it’s football.

“The character of the boys....two of the world’s best strikers are not available and we have to score four goals to go through in 90 minutes.

“As long as we have 11 players on the pitch we will try for 90 minutes to celebrate the Champions League campaign to give it a proper finish.

“That’s the plan. If we can do it wonderful.

“If we can’t do it, let’s fail in the most beautiful way.”
