Why Jurgen Klopp believes Liverpool have just made a 'big statement' in Champions League

Jurgen Klopp believes Liverpool have made a “big statement” by reaching the Champions League semi-final for the second successive season.

The Reds set up a clash with Barcelona next month with a Liverpool verdict - Rampant Reds won't fear Barcelona as stunning double mission gathers pace with Porto rout on Tuesday to win 6-1 on aggregate.

Sadio Mane's first-half away goal killed the tie as a contest while later goals from Liverpool player ratings against Porto - Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane star to set up Barcelona showdown rendered Eder Militao's header mere consolation.

It is the 11th time Liverpool have reached the last four of the European Cup, the most recent of which came last term when Roma were overcome 7-6 on aggregate.

And Klopp said: “Second time in a row in the semis, that's something crazy!

“I think it is really good news. To be in the semi-final for a second time in a row is a big statement.

“Now we are in the semi-final against Barcelona, I’m really happy about the fact we play them.

“We will find things we think we could use. But on the other side I don’t care.

Liverpool send message to Barcelona and Manchester City with emphatic Porto win in Champions League

“We play on Sunday against Cardiff (in the Premier League) and that’s in my mind, not how we play against Barcelona. We have enough time for that.

“So many teams have tried it already, maybe we find something. I’m looking forward to it, but not tonight.”

Liverpool will travel to Camp Nou for the first leg on May 1 or 2 with the second leg at Anfield on May 8 or 9. The other semi-final sees Ajax take on Tottenham Hotspur.

“It is really good news that there is a competition, a proper football game between Liverpool and Barcelona,” said Klopp.

“We will go there, it’s difficult, everybody tries it and nobody did it in the last few years.

“I’m really proud of the boys, it is brilliant what they did. Doing it in different ways makes it even more special. I am really happy.”

Asked if he had already conjured any plans for stopping Lionel Messi and company, Klopp responded: “Thank God I have a few more nights to think about that. So many teams tried that but nobody really did it.

“We have so many jobs to do before we meet Barcelona, let’s first play these games and we will see.”
