Why Josh King is not allowed to play for Everton against Tottenham Hotspur

With a place in the top four still up for grabs, both Everton and Tottenham Hotspur may well opt to make some changes to their line-ups for this evening's FA Cup clash.

In a hectic season, managers are using midweek matches to give players a rest and offer game time to those members of the squad that have not featured as much.

Whilst a relatively strong Everton side overcame Sheffield Wednesday 3-0 in the last round of the competition, Carlo Ancelotti had initially opted to rotate his squad for an after extra-time 2-1 win over Rotherham United in the third round.

With matches against Man City and Liverpool next week, Ancelotti may well be tempted to do the same against Spurs this evening.

Yet one player who cannot get any much-needed minutes in the game is Josh King.

The forward signed for the Toffees on deadline day from Bournemouth to provide back-up for Dominic Calvert-Lewin.

King has so far made two substitute appearances for his new side, playing a total of 12 minutes.

Whilst the FA Cup represents the perfect chance for players like King, who have proven Premier League quality but are short on minutes, to get game time, FA rules mean he will be ineligible to play against Spurs.

Rules state a player cannot play for two clubs in the FA Cup in one season.

King has already appeared twice in the FA Cup this season, scoring three goals in two games for former club Bournemouth.

The forward netted twice against Oldham in the third round before scoring the winner against Crawley Town in the fourth round.

It means the 29-year-old will have to sit out the match against Spurs and instead have to continue his wait for a full Toffees debut.
