Why Josh Adams and Liam Williams are suspended for Wales v Ireland Six Nations match

Josh Adams and Liam Williams will not feature at all in Wales' Six Nations opener against Ireland on Sunday afternoon.

The talented duo, who would have been among the first on Wayne Pivac's team sheet, are both suspended for the clash at the Principality Stadium.

Cardiff Blues winger Adams, 25, has been suspended for two Wales matches in total - Ireland and Scotland - after being found to have breached Covid protocols.

It emerged earlier this week that expectant dad Adams had attended a family gathering last weekend, the day after the squad were released from camp to return home briefly.

Adams had attended a gender reveal gathering with his immediate family present last Sunday, where he and his partner revealed they were expecting a baby girl. Footage of the celebratory moment was later posted on social media.

After the squad joined back up together on Tuesday at the Vale Resort, the breach became apparent and was acted upon - with Adams now out of Wales' opening two Six Nations fixtures.

Wales' players have since returned a second round of negative Covid-19 test results ahead of the weekend clash in Cardiff.

Liam Williams, meanwhile, was banned for a total of three matches after receiving a red card while on Scarlets duty. Wales v Ireland is the last match of his suspension. That means he is available to for Wales' match with Scotland on February 13.

He was dismissed back in January by referee Craig Evans after driving into a ruck with his head and making contact with the head of Blues flanker Shane Lewis-Hughes.

A disciplinary hearing saw the 70-cap back-three man assessed under law 9.20 (b) which says a player must not make contact with an opponent above the line of the shoulders.

There had been concerns that Williams would cop a more severe ban, after saying to referee Evans following the red card: "We’ll start playing touch, is it?"

He later made an apologetic phone call to the referee.

Wales boss Wayne Pivac said of Adams' Covid breach: "We are extremely disappointed with the breach and have acted robustly and swiftly to take all appropriate measures.

"All players and management have received detailed briefings and education regarding our protocols, and everyone has a responsibility to abide by the rules.

"On this occasion, Josh has made an error of judgement, he made a mistake and he has shown immediate remorse.

"He was present at a small, immediate family gathering to celebrate a milestone with those close to him but that is against the rules and action had to be taken."

Adams has apologised for his actions, admitting he had made an "error of judgement".

"I would like to apologise unreservedly," said the winger.

"When out of camp, at the weekend, I made an error of judgement. I attended a small gathering of immediate family to celebrate a family milestone.

"It was wrong to do this. I'm aware that everyone needs to follow the rules and being in the public eye I have a responsibility to lead by example and I've fallen short on this occasion.

"I'd like to apologise to my teammates and to our supporters for my mistake."

As for Williams' red card offence, Scarlets boss Glenn Delaney previously said: "I think we've all been in those situations. Nobody is condoning it.

"Unprompted, Liam made the call to Craig, the referee, and Craig accepted that. He'd moved on as well."

Delaney added: "Liam understands. Deep down, he's a competitor who plays on the edge but he knows that's a step too far.

"The sanction comes first, so it's all been dealt with 100 per cent correctly. He was lost for our game for a period of time and now he's sitting out three games.

"There's an impact on us and the national side. There are massive consequences to that event.

"It's been spoken about in detail and there are a lot of opinions around it, which is the nature of the game."
