Why Jose Mourinho was surprised by Paulo Gazzaniga in Tottenham's defeat against Chelsea

Paulo Gazzaniga had a moment of madness on Sunday as he conceded a penalty right at the end of the first half in Tottenham's 2-0 defeat against Chelsea.

Already 1-0 down courtesy of Willian's goal, the Blues were handed a brilliant chance to double their lead before the break as the goalkeeper came rushing out of his goal and clattered into Marcos Alonso.

It looked an easy one for the Argentine to take with his hands but for whatever reason he decided to go with his feet as he tried to stop the left-back getting on the end of Willian's lofted pass.

Gazzaniga totally missed the ball and instead brought down the Spaniard in the area, with VAR awarding a penalty after referee Anthony Taylor had initially given in a free-kick to Spurs.

The error from the 27-year-old proved incredibly costly and Mourinho opened up on the incident when speaking to the media on Monday afternoon to preview the Boxing Day game against Brighton & Hove Albion.

Asked by football.london if he was surprised that the shot-stopper didn't go with his hands, he said: "Yeah. Yeah. I was surprised. But that's football, I think its an easy one. It's an easy one.

"I spoke with him to try to understand and even himself, he was not in control of his action and he made a mistake.

"But during matches, players make mistakes, referees make mistakes and coaches make mistakes. No problem."

Gazzaniga will continue in goal for Spurs with the club confirming that Hugo Lloris is still continuing his rehabilitation from the elbow injury that he suffered against Brighton at the start of October.
