Why Jose Mourinho brought up Jurgen Klopp and Liverpool when discussing January transfer plans

Tottenham boss Jose Mourinho has revealed he wants to take inspiration from Jurgen Klopp in terms of using the transfer market to improve the squad.

The north London side showed no hesitation in splashing the cash over the summer, bringing in a host of new recruits.

Matt Doherty joined from Wolverhampton Wanderers while Sergio Reguilon and Gareth Bale made the switch from Real Madrid, with the latter penning a temporary deal until the end of the season to return to Spurs.

Carlos Vinicius, Joe Hart and Joe Rodon were also brought in to add squad depth.

Mourinho has hinted that January could be a quiet month and next summer he will only need to make a couple of signings to improve his side, using the window in a similar way to Liverpool's Jurgen Klopp who signed just three players during the summer.

The Reds landed Thiago Alcanatara, Diogo Jota and Konstantinos Tsimikas before this month's deadline day.

"More than the squad it's time to work, it's time for evolution, time to affect the team," he said.

"Not just the way we play but the way we think and sometimes the way we think takes more time than other things.

"I'm very happy with the squad. Of course next summer I will need to give another couple of touches but this is what you always do, improve your squad.

"You look for example to Liverpool, how many years Jurgen has been there, how many transfer windows he went to the market and improved the team.

"I think with us, I don't want to try and compare us with Liverpool, of course not, but what we need now is time to work and to improve our dynamic at every level."

Spurs will take on Burnley away from home on Monday night in the Premier League, before resuming their UEFA Europa League campaign against Belgian side Antwerp in midweek.
