Why John Stones was missing from Man City squad vs West Brom as Sergio Aguero returns

John Stones is not carrying an injury despite missing Manchester City's Premier League game with West Brom.

The 26-year-old has fought his way back into the team after two years of injuries and personal issues preventing him from holding down a regular place, and started alongside Ruben Dias for the Manchester derby as they notched another clean sheet.

Dias keeps his place in the XI to continue his run in the team but Stones did not even make the matchday squad for the visit of the Baggies; Nathan Ake, left out at Old Trafford, returned to the starting XI for his first league start since October 17, with Aymeric Laporte on the bench for a fourth consecutive game.

City's French defender is joined on the bench by Sergio Aguero. The club record scorer missed the derby after falling sick on the evening of the game but has returned to the squad as he works his way towards full fitness following a lengthy battle that has seen him sidelined for effectively six months.

"It is not rotation," said Guardiola when asked bout the changes ahead of kick-off. "I think today all the managers put the best XI to win the game. I could select another one but I decide on this one. It's nothing special."
