Why Fleetwood boss Joey Barton will not be in the dugout against Sunderland

Former Newcastle United midfielder Joey Barton will not be in the dugout for Fleetwood Town's clash with Sunderland on New Year's Day.

The former Magpie was sent to the stands after Ched Evans' goal was ruled out with 20 minutes remaining of his side's 0-0 draw with Bristol Rovers on Sunday.

Referee Paul Marsden chalked the goal off following a consultation with his linesman after Evans' strike partner Paddy Madden was adjudged to have been stood in an offside position.

Barton disputed the decision with the officials for three minutes before he was given his marching orders.

The 37-year-old will not be on the touchline at Highbury as his side host the Black Cats after admitting his language breaching FA Rule E3 for abusive, insulting, or improper language.

Speaking to the club's website about the decision, the Fleetwood boss said: "I have watched it back now multiple times and I am surprised it has been ruled out.

“I don’t know what goes on these days with referees. We don’t have VAR or a monitor to go and look back at stuff, but we have to accept it and move on.

“It’s frustrating as we have worked incredibly hard today and one call wasn’t made but that human error is something that you get in football.”
