Why Joe Gomez is starting over Trent Alexander-Arnold for Liverpool at Barcelona

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has revealed the main reason why Trent Alexander-Arnold has dropped to the bench for the Reds' Champions League semi-final first leg at Barcelona.

Alexander-Arnold has starred for Liverpool this season, providing nine assists in the Premier League as the club battle for the title.

But Joe Gomez has been preferred in Liverpool's backline for the crucial contest at the Camp Nou. It's the 21-year-old's first start since breaking his leg last December.

Klopp, however, insists the decision is not a slight on Alexander-Arnold, with the 20-year-old named on the bench for the Reds.

“For Trent it’s good, he can refresh a little bit, there are important games to come. But the first thing we wanted to make was a good line-up for tonight and for a good line-up you need legs and that’s what we tried to make sure," Klopp explained.

"It was clear when Joe would be available again that there would be a game and I think today it makes absolute sense in that position."
