Why Joao Pedro is OUT of Chelsea squad against Manchester United today

Chelsea are hopeful Joao Pedro should make a recovery from a thigh injury in time to feature against his former team Brighton on Tuesday night.

The Brazilian was a surprise absentee from the Blues’ starting lineup for Saturday’s league clash with Manchester United.

Standard Sport understands he has suffered a thigh injury.

There is hope, however, that it is not serious and that he could be back in time to play against Brighton on Tuesday in another crucial game in Chelsea’s pursuit of Champions League football next season.

The forward has enjoyed a successful first campaign for the Blues since signing from Brighton midway through the Club World Cup last summer, scoring 19 goals and leading the line.

His absence against Brighton means Liam Delap starts against Man United, though.

Discussing Joao Pedro’s absence and handing Delap a chance, Liam Rosenior said: “Joao felt his thigh a few days ago. He was touch and go for this one, so hopefully we'll have him back for Brighton on Tuesday.

“They're a different profile of striker: Liam likes to stretch and run behind, Joao likes to play to feet.

“But we feel like Liam has been really pushing for his opportunity to play and hopefully goes out there and takes it.”

In an interview with The Standard in September, Joao Pedro admitted his ambitions with his new club include becoming a “Chelsea legend”.

He has formed a strong relationship on the pitch with Cole Palmer, with both players assisting each other on multiple occasions throughout the season.

He is hoping to lead the line as Brazil's No9 at this summer’s World Cup.
