Why Joao Felix's transfer to Atletico Madrid still hasn't been announced yet

The delay in Atletico Madrid formally announcing a deal has been completed for Joao Felix is down to the youngster's parent club Benfica and their accounts.

The Spanish giants have beaten off competition from across Europe to sign the talented teenager - including Manchester City and Manchester United.

Reports emerged last week suggesting the La Liga outfit were on the verge of confirming the deal and presenting the Portugal international as their player.

Benfica, however, issued a strong statement denying a transfer was close to completion and stated the forward was still their man.

Despite that, it remains a matter of when, not if, Atletico confirm the transfer of the teenage star.

The deal, however, is still yet to be announced by any of the parties involved and AS report that is down to an issue regarding Benfica's accounts.

The Primera Liga champions have already racked up over £110m in player sales for the 2018-19 season, with the deal for the 19-year-old expected to add another £105m to their coffers.

The Portuguese titans, though, are eager for a deal to be completed on July 1 so that the money from the Felix transfer appears on next season's accounts, hence the delay.

Atletico are understood to be happy to wait a few more days to confirm the deal, knowing they have got one of Europe's most promising talents.

Felix has shot to fame over the past 12 months after netting 18 goals in 33 games for Benfica.

The 19-year-old has also made his Portugal debut and was part of the squad that won the Nations League finals earlier this month.

The talented teen was also recently praised by former Portugal international Simao, who believes his countryman can become Europe's best player within three years.
