Jesse Lingard told Ole Gunnar Solskjaer he wanted to fight for his place at Manchester United ahead of the new season.
Lingard recovered from his midweek mistake that gifted Young Boys victory over United in the Champions League to score a stunning winner in the 89th minute at former club West Ham.
The 28-year-old has scored two goals in his last two games in the Premier League and Lingard was treated to a warm ovation by West Ham supporters, who sang, 'Jesse Lingard, he wants to come home'. Lingard scored nine goals in 16 games on loan at West Ham earlier this year.
However, Lingard resisted an offer from West Ham in the summer to stay at United, where he is approaching the last nine months of his contract. Lingard has already rejected United's opening offer of a new deal but showed his worth with a matchwinning strike at the London Stadium.
"I think today was a good answer!" Solskjaer replied when asked why Lingard had stayed at United. "Jesse was quite clear he wants to fight for his place and be part of a Man United team that is going places.
"I can't speak for Jesse now but he's really contributing, he'll play on Wednesday as I'll make a few changes. So pleased he handles the highs and lows really well. He's becoming a grown man and is a very good player.
"As I've said, I'm very happy with the squad, we have to be good at rotating, finding the right moment to rest players. It's going to be a long, hard season.
"So happy for Jesse and Jadon to come on and impact the game as they did and Nemanja played his part with his pass into Jesse and a great strike."
Lingard is set to make his first start of the season against West Ham at Old Trafford in the League Cup third round on Wednedsay night.
