Why Jeremy Clarkson had to call time on Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? contestant Alex Beresford - viewers react

Alex Beresford's time on Who Wants to be a Millionaire? was controversially cut short by a klaxon that ended his run on the Jeremy Clarkson-hosted quiz show on Wednesday night (November 17).

The Bristol weatherman and presenter did well and had just secured £16,000 for Bristol's Empire Fighting Chance when the hour-long ITV show had to end, to the dismay of some of those watching.

Viewers of the regular non-celebrity show would have expected Beresford to be able to return to continue winning money for his chosen charity - but it was not to be for the 41-year-old contestant.

On his way to the £16,000, Beresford answered questions on pastries, TV, language and rodents, but had to use a lifeline with a tennis question.

And before he ran out of time, Clarkson helped him with a question about the music soundtrack to Saturday Night Fever.

But then, the studio turned red as the klaxon sounded.

Clarkson, 61, said: "And that klaxon means it is the end of the show. And because this is a celebrity special, there is no rollover."

To which a surprised looking Beresford said simply: "Okay."

Clarkson added: "But it does mean that you will be leaving here with £16,000."

There was some criticism on twitter for the abrupt end of the show

Tam @Tshilham said: "Really, really unfair. Should have been able to continue and then rolled over into another ep. Surely filming could have carried on that day…"

Tamsin @TamsinFife said: "That was unfair. Unfair for Alex, unfair for the charity and unfair for the viewer, we all want to know how much more he could have won. Please bring him back for another show."

Matt Wooly @wooly_matt asked: Since when in 23 years of #WhoWantsToBeAMillionaire including celebrity specials was that the rule. Very poor ending, felt very unfair."

David @Rebel287 said: "How can it be who wants to be a millionaire when you don’t get a chance to complete it!?"
