Everton sealed their place in the third round of the Carabao Cup with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Huddersfield Town.
Alex Iwobi put the Blues ahead before Andros Townsend got the winner though it was a bad night for Moise Kean who saw red after an altercation with a home player.
However, they weren’t the only incidents that took place at the John Smith’s Stadium on Tuesday night.
Here are five things we spotted...

Gbamin's pre-match giveaway
After 738 days, Jean-Philippe Gbamin finally returned to the Everton starting line-up.
Not only that, but the midfielder managed to play 90 minutes for the first time since his second appearance in a royal blue shirt.
All of that would have given the former Mainz star a huge amount of confidence, and his gesture before the match even started helped him reconnect in some ways to the Everton fan-base.
Gbamin jumped into the crowd as the away end was still filling up during the warm-up and received a huge ovation from those already in the stand.
Some fans have reported that, in fact, the midfielder hit someone with a ball during the warm-up - before making his way into the stand to give his shirt to the supporter affected.
Regardless he returned to the pitch with a big smile on his face, and hopefully that much was the same when he left the ground after a solid 90 minutes.
Lucas Digne keeps promise
One lucky Blue shared a special moment with Lucas Digne ahead of kick-off at the John Smith’s Stadium.
As fans watched on as the players got off the team coach and entered the stadium, one daring youngster went beyond the barrier and reached out to the Blues defender.
Footage on social media showed Digne pick up his little fan and the pair had a brief chat.
The Frenchman later shared an image of the encounter and wrote on Twitter, ‘no word for this’ alongside a blue heart emoji.
Clearly understanding what meeting one of his idols would mean, Digne promised the lad his shirt and, after the game, kept his word, bringing it out to him.
What a day for the young Evertonian - meeting his hero, getting his shirt and a win on the road too.
‘Our left back is magic and his name is Lucas Digne’. A magic response from a magic Everton player.
Kit choice
Everton's choice of kit was certainly something to catch the eye on Tuesday evening.
It was great to see the Black Watch-inspired strip utilised again for the first time in 2021/22, having been first seen in the final match of the previous term.
But those eagle-eyed fans will have noticed something a little different about the kit this time around.
Instead of black socks being used, Everton were forced to change things up as their regular choice would have clashed with the option already used by the home side.
As such the Blues donned orange socks for the clash with Huddersfield, but not ones that were necessarily meant to be used with the away kit, as the colour didn't match the sash across the front of the shirt.
In fact, the socks used looked to be from the goalkeeper's third kit, which is a full orange strip.
Benitez’s swift reactions
Evertonians have already seen the new Blues boss is quick to change things up if the team needs a boost on the pitch but his reactions on the touchline on Tuesday evening were all together more rapid.
That’s because the Spaniard swiftly had to dodge the action which spilled into his technical area.
In the second half, as the two teams toiled, a challenge saw one player slide towards the Everton boss who quickly lifted up his foot to evade the oncoming player.
Avoiding what could have been a nasty fall, Benitez was coolness personified and gave a wry smile to the referee after stepping out the way of danger.
The Toffees manager has so far steered clear from any possible slip-ups, recording his second competitive victory of the season and ensuring Everton are in the hat for the next round.
Gray's Iwobi gesture
At the end of the match, it was heartening to see the Everton squad all go over and applaud the travelling fans after a hard-fought win.
Those in the stand were clearly delighted to see their side go through to the next round and had been in fantastic voice throughout the 90 minutes to help the players to the victory.
And it was no different following the game, with certain players in particular getting great ovations from the crowd.
One of those was substitute Demarai Gray, who had again put in a really promising display after being introduced in the second half.
As the Everton fans chanted his name following the final whistle, however, the winger's reaction was an interesting one.
After applauding the supporters the former Bayer Leverkusen man seemed to point towards Alex Iwobi in a bid to get his teammate some of the ovation following the game.
The goalscorer certainly deserved it, having put in another influential performance for his side to continue a strong start to the season.
That small show of togetherness is nice to see at this early stage of the campaign.
