Why James Garner and Tahith Chong loan spells from Manchester United didn't work out

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has backed James Garner and Tahith Chong to learn from their unsuccessful loan spells after both Manchester United youngsters moved to new clubs in the January transfer window.

Garner saw his deal with Watford brought to an early end before he moved back out to fellow Championship side Nottingham Forest for the rest of the season, while Chong moved to Club Brugge after his loan at Werder Bremen failed to work out.

Garner, 19, made 20 Championship appearances for the Hornets but only 12 were starts, the last of which came in the week before Christmas. Chong, 21, made 13 appearances in the Bundesliga but only four were starts.

Both players will hope for more success in the second half of the season having had the loan deals they struck in the summer window terminated to try and get them playing more first-team football.

Solskjaer is hoping they will find their second loan spells of the season more productive than the first and will benefit from that experience.

"Sometimes one of the big learning points on your first loan is how to cope with the situation, learn in a different environment," he said.

"Jimmy has played quite a bit lately, but when the new manager came in we felt and they felt that it was right for him to find somewhere else.

"Tahith it didn't really work out the way we wanted, but he's had some exposure and hopefully know he'll kick on again."

Another United youngster heading out on loan for the second half of the season is Teden Mengi, with the 18-year-old joining Derby County until the end of the season.

"We feel he's taken some great strides when he's been here, we looked at a few options and we felt that was a good option, he felt comfortable and confident in going there so hopefully he'll get some important match minutes in a good league," said Solskjaer.

"When you get to that age sometimes it's not enough challenges in every game, it doesn't prepare you enough for that physical striker he might be facing in the first team so to play in the Championship is a great challenge for him."
