Why Jadon Sancho is on Borussia Dortmund bench vs Schalke

Jadon Sancho has been named on the bench by Borussia Dortmund for their home game with Schalke.

The 20-year-old has been carrying an injury this week and was rated as a doubt to start for the second-placed side in the Bundesliga.

Manchester United enquired about Sancho last year and remain interested in signing the winger as he approaches the last two years of his Dortmund contract.

Dortmund have recently sounded confident about keeping Sancho until next year but that has been dismissed by United sources as brinkmanship amid the likelihood of a one-club auction, and Dortmund chief executive Hans-Joachim Watzke admitted in March it was likely Sancho would be sold this year.

The likelihood is Dortmund would still look to bank over £100million for Sancho, having sold Ousmane Dembele to Barcelona in 2017 for a staggering £135.5m.

United wanted to sign Sancho from Manchester City in 2017 but their rivals resisted any offers from English clubs and sold Sancho to Dortmund for £8m.

Londoner Sancho is understood to have expressed interest in returning to Manchester and has also been linked with a move to boyhood club Chelsea.

The Schalke winger Rabbi Matondo, viewed by United as a possible back-up option for Sancho, is also on the bench for Schalke. The 19-year-old joined Schalke from City last year.
