Why Jack Grealish and Phil Foden were not involved for Man City vs PSG in Champions League clash

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has confirmed that Phil Foden missed Wednesday evening's UEFA Champions League clash with Paris Saint-Germain after continuing to struggle with a "problem" he first encountered against Everton, thought to be a minor knock.

Foden was a surprise absentee from the squad against the French heavyweights, with Riyad Mahrez coming to replace the England international.

The Stockport-born ace has been in fine form of late and City's supporters were left worried by his absence when the team news was confirmed around an hour before kick-off.

However, Guardiola issued an update on Foden ahead of kick-off, insisting that the City ace was still feeling the effects of an issue he suffered against the Toffees on Sunday and in training again on Tuesday.

Issuing an update on the England star, as well as summer signing Jack Grealish, who was once again absent against Mauricio Pochettino's side, Guardiola told BT Sport : " Jack was injured after National team and Phil had a problem in the last game with Everton.

"Yesterday he had problem in training so couldn’t play."

Whilst the City boss refused to be drawn on what exactly is wrong with Foden, it isn't thought to be anything too serious, with it understood to be nothing more than a knock that has left him below 100 per cent.

As for the game itself, City entered the contest looking to inflict revenge on PSG after being beaten 2-0 in Paris in the reverse fixture back at the end of September.

Despite being the more dominant side that evening, City were undone thanks to goals from Idrissa Gueye and Lionel Messi.

On what City needed to do to come out on top this time around, Guardiola added: How you say be more ruthless, what do you have to do to be more ruthless?

"They tried in Paris and they will try today. It depends on how their goalkeeper and strikers play. Hopefully we do a good game with our people and get a result."
