Why it would be a 'mistake' for Newcastle United to replace Steve Bruce with Mauricio Pochettino

The prospective owners of Newcastle United would be making a 'mistake' if they replaced Steve Bruce with Mauricio Pochettino.

That's the view of Paul Merson, who believes the Magpies will require a more 'pragmatic' manager such as former Magpies' boss Rafa Benitez if they choose to replace the head coach.

Bruce's future on Tyneside has been the subject of speculation in recent weeks, with reports claiming the would-be owners will look to replace the 59-year-old following a takeover.

Former Tottenham boss Pochettino has been cited as one of the favourites for the role, and the Argentinian recently admitted a Premier League return was his 'priority'.

Benitez is considered another contender, but the popular former United manager remains under contract with Chinese Super League outfit Dalian Professional.

Former Arsenal and England midfielder Merson believes replacing Bruce would be a mistake, insisting he is 'perfect' for the job.

The Sky Sports pundit doubts Pochettino's chances of becoming a success at St James' Park, claiming a return to "Kevin Keegan football" would lead the club to relegation.

In Merson's view, the would-be owners should opt for Benitez if they decide Bruce is not the man to lead the club forward.

Merson told the Daily Star: "Newcastle's new owners would be making a mistake if they get rid of Steve Bruce and get Mauricio Pochettino.

"The takeover looks like it’s about to happen, and new owners usually want their own man in place.

"But I think Steve Bruce has done a fantastic job. It’s a hard job and he's done it so well. I’m a big fan of his. I think he’s perfect for them and should keep his job.

"Can you really see someone like Pochettino being a success there? He likes to open games up and tries to win with flair. Newcastle’s squad isn’t made for that.

"If they think it’s suddenly going to be Kevin Keegan football all over again they will end up getting relegated.

"It’s all very well saying the new owners will throw money at it. But how much? And who could you attract to transform that team overnight? It won’t be easy.

"At Newcastle you need to be realistic sometimes. You need to play with ten behind the ball sometimes, even at home.

"If they’re really going to replace Steve Bruce they need someone like Rafa Benitez who’s a bit more pragmatic. Not Pochettino."
