Why it's harder to get a McDonald's in Bristol than nearly anywhere else in the UK

Bristol residents have to look harder for a McDonald’s restaurant than people in almost any other UK city.

New research shows that Bristol has just six branches to serve its population of around 455,964 - equating to one for every 75,994 people.

Only St Albans (one restaurant per 147,025), Bath and North East Somerset (93,473) and Oxford (77,646) are more poorly served, while Newport’s seven branches (21,354) ensure that south Wales is home to the UK’s McDonald’s capital.

The analysis, carried out by Reach plc’s data unit, used the McDonald’s branch locator to pinpoint the location of all 1,296 of the company’s UK restaurants.

Population statistics were then used to work out which local authorities have the most - and fewest - McDonald’s per head.

Technically, central London - consisting of Westminster and the City of London - emerged as top of the tree, but it was excluded because far more people work there than live there.

With London ruled out, Newport took the crown, followed by Lincoln (24,346), Preston (28,205), Manchester (28,490), Chelmsford (29,033), Liverpool (30,475), Stoke-on-Trent (31,707), Gloucester (32,089), Glasgow (32,372), Peterborough (32,789) and Worcester (33,976).

When towns and rural local authorities are included, Watford emerges as even more McDonald’s-mad than Newport.

The Hertfordshire town has five restaurants serving its 96,577 residents - or one for every 19,315 people.
