Why it is now time for Rangers' Lawrence Shankland to be Scotland's main striker

Kris Boyd feels it is finally time for Lawrence Shankland to be Scotland's main striker - and not just because og his own talents.

There has long been a clamour for the new Rangers signing to have more of a central role due to him being perceived as a better finisher than the likes of Che Adams and Lyndon Dykes - plus his all-round game has improved over the years.

Shankland played a peripheral role at Euro 2024, one of the many factors which earned Steve Clarke criticism.

Boyd wants to see the 30-year-old now given the chance to be that main striker at the World Cup. Not just because of the talents he possesses - but also because the team is now in more of a position to accomodate him.

He told the Scottish Sun: "In months gone by, you felt as if maybe the Scotland squad didn't have enough to allow Lawrence Shankland to be what Lawrence Shankland is: a goal scorer.

"I think it has now. I think we can control games of football. We've got enough players there that can dictate what tempo the game of football is played at, which then allows Lawrence Shankland to get in positions to score goals.

"We seen that at the weekend. I think the first one is an unbelievable finish as well, the way he wraps his foot round that and off the post.

"For me, I think that we've got potentially pace in the wide areas. We've got creativity from behind him, you've got McTominay. I think you can tell a lot of the time when you look at midfielders as well, when it goes up to Lawrence Shankland, it's sticking."
