Why isn’t there a hi-tech alternative to the windscreen wiper?

One of the very few parts of the motor car that has remained virtually unchanged for 100 years is the windscreen wiper. Why hasn’t anyone come up with a more hi-tech solution for clearing rainwater from windscreens than a squeegee blade mounted on the end of a metallic arm?
