Why isn't Emmerdale, Corrie or EastEnders on New Year's Day? Schedule change explained

Soap fans looking forward to the usual dramatic New Year's Day episodes of their favourite shows may be left disappointed this year.

Emmerdale, Coronation Street and EastEnders have all 'ditched' airing episodes on New Year's Day this year, according to the latest TV listings, despite it often being one of their biggest episodes.

The ITV and BBC Christmas TV schedules have been revealed, teasing a huge shake-up for the soaps.

From shows airing across weekends or airing on days they normally would not, to not being on in their usual time slots, it's all change for the festive period as it often is at this time of year.

But no soap will air on New Year's Day this year at all, with hour-long episodes airing on New Year's Eve instead.

This is because in 2022, New Year's Day, January 1, lands on a Saturday.

Of course the soaps never air on Saturdays, so this is why we won't be getting a dramatic New Year opener this time around.

EastEnders is known for its huge January 1 episodes, from deaths, shocking twists and all sorts airing.

But like Emmerdale and Corrie, it too will not feature an instalment on this day with it being a weekend, when the soaps do not or rarely air.

That said, the Saturday before will see all three soaps make a change and air huge episodes.

Of course this is because it's Christmas Day, and they could hardly miss that even if it is a Saturday!

But fear not viewers, you will not be missing any action from the Dales, Weatherfield or Walford without the New Year's Day instalment.

There will be plenty more action and longer episodes before this day, and after too as huge storylines play out for fans to enjoy.

On Christmas Eve, Emmerdale is on ITV at 7pm, followed by Corrie at 8:30pm, and on Christmas Day there's an hour-long episode of Emmerdale at 7pm followed by an hour-long Corrie at 8pm.

Boxing Day sees Emmerdale at 7pm and Corrie at 7:30pm, while it's the next few days following this that see a shake-up with Corrie on at 9pm for an hour on both December 27 and 28 - while Emmerdale remains in its usual 7pm slot.

Emmerdale's full Christmas guide can be found here, and Corrie has also announced when it will air over the full period.

New Year's Eve sees two more hour-long episodes with Emmerdale at 7pm, clashing with BBC One's EastEnders which starts at 7:10pm, and then Corrie stars at 8pm.

EastEnders' full Christmas guide can be found here, while the BBC soap airs much later episodes than usual on both Christmas Day and Boxing Day like they normally do on these special occasions.

This soap also features a change in timings across the entire festive week.
