Long-running school drama Waterloo Road is set to return to TV screens after being revived by the BBC.
The show originally ran on BBC One and BBC Three from 2009, but it was shelved by the corporation in 2015 when ratings began to decline.
Now, though, the series is back. We don’t, however, know any details about the cast members or what storylines we can expect, but be prepared for some gripping action when the school drama does come back to our TV screens.
So, why has the BBC committed to bringing back Waterloo Road? Here’s why the show is returning and what else we can expect.
Why is Waterloo Road coming back?
The hugely popular school drama, Waterloo Road, is set for a dramatic return to our TV screens.
It will be set and made in Greater Manchester and produced by Wall-to-Wall alongside Rope Ladder Fiction, the label run by Cameron Roach, who was the executive producer on the original series.
Waterloo Road is coming back, the BBC says, to ‘boost drama production skills’ in northern England and is part of the corporation’s plan to better ‘reflect’ and ‘represent’ different parts of the country.
Its website says: “The spotlight on education in the UK is more intense now than ever before, with awareness of the challenges that teachers, parents and pupils face even more pronounced amidst the ongoing pandemic.
“Waterloo Road will use its rich history of telling entertaining and gripping human stories while tackling the important issues of the day.
“The revival of Waterloo Road will boost drama production skills in the North of England and help to reshape the BBC's drama slate to better reflect, represent and serve all parts of the country.
“The series will provide a training ground for new and diverse writers, which is of significant importance to both the BBC and Cameron Roach. Roach is renowned for his passion for long-running drama series and the power they have to develop and encourage emerging talent.”
When will Waterloo Road air?
No air date has been confirmed for new episodes of Waterloo Road yet, but we do know it will be returning to BBC One.
