Why is Thursday a public holiday? Will the shops be open? Queen Elizabeth's memorial holiday explained

Thursday has been declared a one-off public holiday to give Australians the opportunity to mourn the death of Queen Elizabeth II.

Here is all you need to know about what is happening tomorrow and how it might impact your day.

Is Thursday a public holiday?

Australia's National Day of Mourning coincides with our National Memorial Service for the Queen, with leaders from across the country heading to Parliament House in Canberra to join the prime minister and the governor-general for the service tomorrow.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese only got home from London, where he attended the Queen's state funeral, on Wednesday morning — meaning tomorrow is the first opportunity for Australia to hold its own event.

How can I get involved with the Day of Mourning for the Queen?

The national service will be broadcast across the country on ABC TV, ABC News, ABC Local Radio and ABC iview.

Mr Albanese is encouraging all Australians to take part in a minute's silence when the service begins at 11am AEST.

You can find out more about the ceremony here.

If you want to get out and about, some churches and government houses around the country will be holding their own services or screening the national service.

States and territories have opened condolence books for people to sign both in person and online. You can also sign the Australian government's online condolence form.

Are supermarkets going to be open?

Almost all Coles and Woolworths stores will be open but for limited hours which vary by location, so check online before you head to the shops.

Will public holiday pay rates apply?

According to Fair Work, yes.

The public holiday trading rules vary depending on where you live, so head to the Fair Work website for more details.

Will schools and hospitals be open?

Schools and childcare centres will generally be closed.

Essential health services like public hospitals will be open but bear in mind that the system could be impacted by staff shortages triggered by the public holiday.

Thousands of people have also had their elective surgery and medical appointments booked for the day cancelled.

Will September 22 be a public holiday every year now?

No, this is a one-off.

Mr Albanese wrote to each of the country's premiers and chief ministers asking them to declare Thursday a public holiday "to commemorate Her Majesty’s remarkable life and dedication to service," according to a statement released earlier this month.

Will double demerits be in place for the public holiday?

NSW has announced that a double demerit period will be in place from Wednesday to Sunday.

Do I get an extra-long weekend for the AFL grand final?

If you work in an industry that shuts down on public holidays, yes! The 'Friday before the AFL grand final' public holiday remains in place on Friday, but only in Victoria.
