Why is there a PS5 shortage?

Since its release in November 2020, the next generation console PlayStation 5 has been in high demand.

Hit by supply problems, production of the PS5 almost crept to a standstill - this saw resellers of the device listing it at over £800, having previously been officially stocked in shops at £449.99.

The scarcity has seen a boom in scalpers operating across the internet, similar to that of 'sneaker' dealers who use automated software to hoover up new releases and sell them on at an eye-watering profit.

Why is there a PS5 shortage?

The PS5 shortage is linked to the global lack of semiconductor chips, the same reason last year's Apple iPhone release was met with production issues.

Taiwanese Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. has announced an imminent price increase of up to 20 per cent for its chips, which could see PS5 and Microsoft Xbox Series X prices soar even higher.

Despite August becoming one of the most successful months regarding attempts to restock the PS5, they were quickly snapped up.
