Why is the next storm called Storm Jorge instead of Storm Ellen?

Another storm is set to target the UK this weekend but it has a different name than the one you might be expecting.

The low pressure system has been named Storm Jorge – pronounced Hor-hay.

It is not going to be called Storm Ellen, which is the next name on the Met Office's 2019-20 list.

This is because of Jorge was named by the Spanish Meteorological Service.

A spoksman for the Met Office said: "There are a number of storm naming groups within Europe that name low pressure systems that have the potential to bring severe weather.

"In this instance the Spanish met service named the low pressure, therefore all other national met services then use that name.

"The system will not be named Ellen but we will align with our European partners and refer to it as Jorge."

A number of weather warnings have been issued in advance of Storm Jorge this weekend (Met Office)

But the Met Office said this should have no bearing on how residents react to the storm this weekend.

They added: "The fact that the system may have a different name than some expected should not influence their response.

"The weather over the weekend could have impacts due to the strong winds and those in the warning areas should take the advice of local emergency services seriously."
