Why is Prime Minister Keir Starmer not at PMQs today? Absence explained

KEIR Starmer will not appear in the Commons today for Prime Ministers' Questions.

Instead, it is expected that his deputy, David Lammy, will stand in to take questions from the opposition.

Starmer's absence comes as he attends the G7 summit alongside the leaders of France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Canada, and the United States.

The Prime Minister left for the summit in Evian-les-Bains, in the east of France, on Monday.

During the summit he has sought to continue European pressure on Russia, unveiling new sanctions on the country's shadow fleet after seizing a tanker in the English Channel.

However, his authority has been damaged by the ongoing uncertainty over his leadership, with Andy Burnham and Wes Streeting waiting in the wings to launch an official bid.

The Makerfield by-election on Thursday could be Burnham's path back to Westminster, giving him the chance to stand in a contest.

Starmer is reportedly willing to offer Burnham a senior position in his government to avoid a prolonged leadership challenge, which he is expected to lose to the Manchester mayor.

Former armed forces minister Al Carns has also spoken about his intention to stand as a candidate, splitting the party.

Speaking during the G7 event on the new sanctions against Russia, Starmer said: "Russia’s aggression threatens not just Ukraine, but the security of all Europe.

"That is why the UK is stepping up – choking off the revenues that fuel Putin’s war and powering Ukraine through the winters ahead.

"We will stand with Ukraine for as long as it takes and this announcement reinforces that. Putin should roll back his tanks, end his barbaric strikes, and come to the negotiating table."

When will PMQs take place today

PMQs will take place on Wednesday at 12pm in the House of Commons.
