Why is Gerry Hutch called 'The Monk'? Full details as mob boss swarmed by cops in dramatic arrest

Gerry 'The Monk' Hutch has hit the headlines once more after his dramatic arrest.

Hutch is wanted by gardai as part of an investigation into the Regency Hotel murder of Kinahan gangster David Byrne.

The Dublin native, 58, was at large until August 12th, 2021, when he was arrested by police in Spain.

David Byrne was murdered during the Regency Hotel attack in February 2016.

It took place at a boxing event and was revenge for his nephew Gary Hutch’s murder in Spain.

Byrne’s killing escalated the Kinahan-Hutch feud which has so far claimed 18 lives.

Cartel boss Daniel Kinahan, who was in the hotel at the time, was the target of the hit but he managed to flee.

Why is Gerry Hutch called The Monk?

Gerry was a non-smoker and a non-drinker, on account of losing four of his friends in the Bugsy Malones gangs while growing up to issues surrounding addiction.

He abhorred the use of drugs and the problems it caused.

This was what ultimately earned him the nickname 'The Monk' as he acted soberly at all times, as monks who are trained to do.

The nickname was bestowed upon him by Veronica Guerin, the journalist who was murdered in 1996.

What's the latest on his situation?

Hutch was lifted by Spanish cops alongside a uniformed garda in a Spanish restaurant last week.

Footage released by local police shows disguised officers walk into the establishment and confront Hutch as he perused a menu alongside a blonde woman.

The Dubliner was then cuffed and led out of the busy restaurant in the Costa del Sol resort of Fuengirola last Thursday.

Hutch was wearing a bumbag and “typical foreigner” sandals when finally arrested, the Irish Mirror revealed on Tuesday.

Cops from the Guardia Civil's Central Operative Unit (UCO) had actively been tracking him since the previous month at the request of gardai.

In March, a meeting had taken place in Spain between senior gardai and the UCO, which is tasked with hunting down all on-the-run criminals within Spain’s borders.

Following this, UCO operatives went to Lanzarote, where Hutch has a holiday home, but discovered he had bought a flight to Malaga.
