Why is February 22 so special? All you need to know about palindromes and ambigrams

If you love a good palindromes then today is a special day for you.

Because today February 22 is one of the rare days where the date is a palindrome. At least for countries that write their dates correctly.

When written in the DDMMYYYY format, 22 of February is the palindrome, 22022022.

The most recent one was over two years ago on the 2nd of February 2020.

So what is a palindrome?

A palindrome is a word, phrase, or sequence that reads the same backwards as forwards.

Some of the well-known examples of palindrome are racecar, madam, and the name Hannah.

And the longest single-word palindrome in the English language is the onomatopoeic word tattarrattat that was coined by no other than James Joyce in Ulysses!

Why is today's date an ambigram too?

Not only is today's date a palindrome but it's also an ambigram so it reads the same upside down!

An ambigram is a "visual pun" where words and numbers can be read the same upside down.

So when you flip 22022022 upside down, it'll still read as 22022022.

The last time a date was both a palindrome and an ambigram was February 12, 2021, so it was written as 12022021.
