Why is Coronation Street not on tonight?

Coronation Street fans have been confused to find that their regular helping of Weatherfield life has been cancelled tonight.

ITV are transporting viewers to a galaxy far, far away by replacing the Corrie double bill with Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens instead - and this was planned before the TV schedule was altered because of the coronavirus pandemic.

TV bosses had planned to air extra Thursday episodes in April to make up for it.

But this changed with the recent announcement that Coronation Street is being reduced to single episodes on Monday, Wednesday and Fridays from Monday March 30, so Corrie will be back at 7.30pm on Monday.

The decision to stop the usual six episodes a week was made to ensure that the much-loved soap, which celebrates its 60th birthday in December, could stay on air for as long as possible.

In the new transmission pattern there will still be a Corrie on Friday, so tonight's scheduling is an anomaly.

"Friday night and no Corrie, what's going on," asked one fan.

"Star Wars never gets old! Gutted I can’t enjoy Corrie tonight though, one of highlights of week for me Friday double bill," said another.

Soap fans will also be without EastEnders tonight after the decision was made to screen the BBC soap twice a week on Mondays and Tuesdays instead of four times a week, cutting the Thursday and Friday episodes.

Filming has been stopped on the soaps following the outbreak.

On next week's Corrie evil Geoff is confronted by Alya Nazir about his treatment of her grandmother Yasmeen.

David Platt is in danger when muggers grab him, drag him into an alleyway and pull a knife on him.

And there's joy when an audiologist fits baby Aled’s hearing aids and he hears Chesney and Gemma’s voices for the first time.
