Why is Black History Month celebrated in October and what is this year's Proud To Be campaign?

Today marks the start of Black History Month. Celebrated in October, the event was officially recognised by the US government in 1976 and first celebrated in the UK in 1987.

The event aims to recognise the contribution and achievements of those with African or Caribbean heritage. The month is also an opportunity for people to learn about the effects of racism and the impact of Black history in the UK.

Events and celebrations will be held to share and understand the impact of Black heritage and culture. Last summer's Black Lives Matter protests have sparked a new campaign, led by Black History Month magazine.

Why is Black History Month celebrated in October?

Black History Month was first celebrated in the UK on the 150th anniversary of Caribbean emancipation, which was in October. It was organised by Ghanaian analyst Akyaaba Addai-Sebo, who worked for Greater London Council as a co-ordinator of special projects and was part of the African Jubilee year.

What is the 'Proud to Be' campaign?

Black History Month has launched its 'Proud to Be' campaign. It encourages people of all ages to share what they are proud to be on social media.

Black History Month magazine has sent 500 resource packs to UK schools which include information about key figures and moments in Black British History and a wide variety of lesson plans.

Catherine Ross, the editor of Black History Month UK, said: “It’s been a challenging time for many Black and Brown people, with so much in the media about racism, inequality and injustice.

"We wanted the theme of Black History Month 2021 to focus on celebrating being Black or Brown, and to inspire and share the pride people have in their heritage and culture – in their own way, in their own words.”
