Why is Battersea Power Station famous and is it open to the public?

Battersea Power Station spent decades in decay following its closure in the 1980s, and the enormous site has fallen victim to many unsuccessful restoration attempts over the years.

The site was initially approved to be transformed into an indoor theme park in a project thought up by developer David Roche and Alton Towers owner John Broome, but by 1989 work was halted as costs soared.

From there, the site was acquired by numerous development companies, with plans to develop the station into housing, a museum, leisure complex and more — but all plans fell through.

In 2008 it was even reported that Chelsea FC were interested in acquiring the power station for the construction of a stadium.

But in 2012 it was Malaysian developers SP Setia and Sime Darby who won the bidding process and embarked on a masterplan to bring the site out of disarray.

Now, after nearly a decade and a £9billion restoration process, the iconic London landmark is set to open its doors to the public for the first time in its 90-year history.

Battersea Power Station is a famous London landmark that has been around since the 1930s and is famed for its unique art deco design.

The power station's huge presence has been a beacon along London's skyline since it was first built and it's now one of the city's most recognised landmarks.

From the 1930s to the 1980s, Battersea was a working power station and at its peak it was producing a fifth of London's power, including supply for the Houses of Parliament and Buckingham Palace.

But after being decommissioned between 1975 to 1983, the The Grade II* listed landmark remained empty until 2014 and fell into a state of disrepair.

Despite this, it remained an iconic structure and has been featured in many films, TV programmes and music videos, as well as on Pink Floyd's 1977 Animals album cover.

Battersea Power Station is now open to the public for the first time in its history after undergoing a 10-year renovation.

The power station has been transformed into an enormous leisure complex, housing hundreds of shops and restaurants as well as events spaces.

It is also home to the development of brand new office spaces and luxury flats.

The public can enjoy shopping and dining in one of the restored turbine halls, with Turbine Hall A hosting premium clothing stores while Turning Hall B offers a mix of contemporary brands.

Visitors can also pay to experience the unique glass elevator, which travels 109 meters up the north-west chimney, emerging onto a 360-degree viewing platform.

As well as all of this, there's a newly pedestrianised high street next to the power station named Electric Boulevard, which is home to even more shops.
