iPhone 12 Pro Max Preorders Start November 6

What’s Apple’s point in offering a massive 6.7-inch iPhone 12 Pro Max? Read on.

tl:dr: as the iPhone has increased in size, it has morphed into a mini-tablet, rendering the iPad less essential.

Only 0.3 inches shy of a 7-inch diagonal, the iPhone 12 Pro Max is more tablet than smartphone.

And Apple has designed iOS and apps to take advantage of the larger screen (think: Picture-In-Picture and swipe-up multitasking ).

There’s an economic reason too: a bigger iPhone means the iPad is not an essential (and costly) third device — in addition to your laptop.

You don’t need that iPad (as much as you think you do)

Needless to say, there are lots of hardcore iPad users. I was one. But when the iPhone XS Max ballooned to 6.5 inches, I stopped using the iPad for all practical purposes.

Movie watching, reading, messaging, web surfing, social media is perfectly doable on a large-screen iPhone.

And when I need a larger screen, I jump to a laptop. No ‘tweener devices necessary.

Here’s another way to look at it: everyone I know who has an iPad also has an iPhone and laptop.

My question: do you really, truly need three devices? Yeah, Apple and hundreds of tech site reviewers you will tell you over and over how great the new iPad Air 4 or iPad Pro is. How it’s the best iPad yet and why you’ll want it.

Want is one thing. Need is another.

I don’t need my iPad. I do need a large iPhone with 5G. And the iPhone 12 Pro Max fits the bill.

By the way, you also get other goodies on the Max you don’t get on the standard Pro like more optical zoom, better telephoto (ƒ/2.2 aperture), and longer battery life.

Preorders for the iPhone 12 Pro Max, starting at $1,099, begin on November 6.
