Why hundreds of soldiers were marching through Bristol today

Hundreds of soldiers marched through the streets of Bristol to celebrate the centenary of their regiment.

The 39 Signal Regiment marched in a Freedom of the City Parade through the centre.

The parade marked an important year for regiment as the Royal Corps of the Signals celebrates its centenary.

The parade, of around 200 soldiers, also included a capability demonstration.

The Armed Forces Covenant Outreach vehicle was also in attendance also offering support and guidance to veterans and serving members of the Armed Forces.

The regiment, based in Horfield, was granted the freedom of the city in March last year.

Lord Mayor of Bristol Councillor Jos Clark said: “After granting Freedom of the City, I am very proud to continue the celebration along with this wonderful regiment’s centenary.

"The Signals have such strong heritage here in Bristol through the Royal Signals Units and the North Somerset Yeomanry before that."

Commanding Officer 39 Signal Regiment Lieutenant, Colonel Vincent Connelly Phd TD, said: “It is a great honour and privilege for the 39 Signal Regiment to exercise the Freedom of the City of Bristol in recognition of our strong local links and in commemoration of the centenary of the Royal Signals.

“39 Signal Regiment has long lineage with Bristol through our predecessor Royal Signals Units based here in the Second World War and very much further back with the North Somerset Yeomanry.

"We are exercising this honour for the present generation of Signallers and their families who support us so well and for all who have served in the Royal Signals locally and helped maintain our proud links with the city.

“As an Army Reserve regiment we have people from all walks of life who live and work within Bristol in their day-to-day civilian roles, but who soldier with us on a part time basis.

39 Signal Regiment is an Army Reserve regiment in the Royal Corps of Signals in the British Army. The regiment provides military communications for national operations.
