Why huge military helicopters flew near Bristol Airport

Dramatic photographs show the moment military helicopters flew over Bristol this week.

Aviation enthusiast Dominic Hall took the pictures of the Chinook aircraft as the duo flew close to Bristol Airport.

He said the aircraft approached from the Avonmouth area on Tuesday (June 9) evening before heading south.

A Ministry of Defence spokesperson has now confirmed what type of aircraft they were - and what they were doing in the area.

He said: "I can confirm that there were 2 RAF Chinooks from RAF Odiham in the Bristol area on Tuesday evening one from 18 Sqn and the second a 27 Sqn, both were completing routine operational training."

Earlier this week, Bristol Airport also hosted another military aircraft.

The "unusual" A400M Atlas, based at RAF Brize Norton, was in the area for essential military training.
