Why 'huge' emergency services presence descended on Tesco in Brislington today

A power-cut at a Tesco Extra reportedly prompted a "huge" response from emergency services.

The outage happened shortly before 3pm today (October 20), leading to the early closure of the supermarket and its petrol station in Callington Road, Brislington.

One witness told Bristol Live there was a "huge police presence and fire brigade" on the scene, with "Tesco staff not letting anyone in the car park".

A post on the Brislington Community Page Facebook group complained of "traffic chaos" in both directions on Callington Road at about 3pm.

A Tesco employee said a power-cut was the reason for the closure and emergency services assisted the supermarket in addressing the issue.

The branch and its car park shut slightly earlier than the usual Sunday closing time of 4pm.

A Tesco spokesman said: “Unfortunately as a result of a power cut earlier today we’ve had to close our store temporarily.

"Contractors are on site fixing the problem and we hope to open as normal tomorrow. We are sorry for any inconvenience.”

We have approached Avon Fire and Rescue and Avon and Somerset Constabulary for comment.
