Why hot drinks cool you down in warm weather

When Scotland is enjoying a few days of much-needed sunshine it can become very uncomfortable, very quickly, as our bodies struggle to cope with the increase in temperature.

From struggling to sleep, to feeling fatigue at work, sunny weather definitely has its drawbacks.

When trying to keep cool, the last thing you'll feel like reaching for is a hot drink . That's only going to make you feel hotter, right?

Not according to scientists, who say hot drinks will actually help you cool down.

And in hot countries, where warm temperatures are par for the course, the practice of drinking hot drinks to stay cool is well established.

The scientific backing for this theory is fairly sound, and research on the subject was published by the University of Ottawa’s School of Human Kinetic in 2012.

When your tongue registers that a hot beverage is being consumed, it sends a signal to the brain which orders the body to sweat more.

Sweat evaporating from the skin cools us down, and the extra boost prompted by consuming a hot drink will see us lose more heat than is gained from the warmth of the drink itself - so we end up cooler.

The only time this trick doesn't work is in a humid environment, as sweat won't evaporate so easily.
