Why His Dark Materials made massive change from Philip Pullman novels

If you've read the His Dark Materials novels then you may have noticed some differences when the show adapted the tales.

The television series His Dark Materials has featured events and character from the second novel from Philip Pullman , The Subtle Knife, as events from the first novel Northern Lights (or The Golden Compass) play out elsewhere.

The chief change is the early introduction of Lyra's co-protagonist, Will Parry (Amir Wilson).

According to Radio Times , executive producer Jane Tranter revealed why events from the second novel have happened so early in the show.

At the BBC Writers' Room Festival, Tranter said: "Child actors’ hours are very limited. If we were only filming with Lyra [played by Dafne Keen], we’d still be shooting the first season now!"

"We had to put in Will and more adults and pick up the pace of it."

However, it also served the story of the series in other ways as a well as for practical necessities.

She explained: "The decision to bring Will forward was something that was in the first conversation that Jack [Thorne, writer] and I had.

“How do you take the first novel, which is very Lyra-focus, and then open out for The Subtle Knife and then for The Amber Spyglass, which  really  opens up?  If we just keep it all about Lyra then you’re not beginning to develop [other characters] and it would be a shock when you get to season two."

The story also remains grounded in Philip Pullman's novels and the timeline of Will Parry's story in His Dark Materials.

Tranter added: "It sounds like it was some complicated thing, but it’s easy if you just follow Phillip Pullman’s timeline. Will actually has a timeline that starts earlier than the Subtle Knife.

"In the end, it just made sense to it."

The first season concludes with episode 8, entitled Betrayal, which will see the Magisterium close in on Lyra as she learns more about Lord Asriel's (James McAvoy) rebellion. But her assistance to him comes at great personal cost. Will Mrs Coulter (Ruth Wilson) find Lyra?

A second run has already been confirmed.

His Dark Materials season 1 concludes on Sunday at 8pm on BBC One.
