Why hiring Sean Payton will require NFL teams to make an expensive trade with the Saints

Sean Payton is arguably the biggest name on the head coaching market, one who has won a Super Bowl and had an amazing run of success with the New Orleans Saints.

But it may cost a team more than a lot of money to hire him.

That’s because Payton is still technically under contract with the Saints. Back in 2022, he technically “stepped away” from the franchise, so he wasn’t fired.

And his contract — an extension he signed before 2019 — runs through the 2024 season. So if he joins another team, that franchise will have to compensate the Saints (likely with draft picks, maybe some that are Day 2 types?), a win for a franchise that desperately needs future assets.

He spoke about compensation with Colin Cowherd earlier this week:
