Why have more restrictions been introduced in Oldham?

Oldham has escaped a full Leicester-style lockdown, but will face stricter measures due to high infection rates.

It recorded 187 new cases in the seven days to August 17 – the equivalent of 78.9 per 100,000 people, although it's down from 111.8 in the seven days to August 10.

Positive cases of the virus have been reported in almost all neighbourhoods, however, most cases are across central Oldham, particularly in the areas of Alexandra Park and Werneth.

Targeted testing and other measures have brought numbers down significantly with health secretary Matt Hancock agreeing on Friday that a full lockdown would not be necessary.

People in Oldham will be told not to socialise with other households anywhere.

This is a stricter message than the present rules, which had still allowed people to meet in outside public spaces such as parks and outside pubs and restaurants.

Oldhamers will also be advised only to use public transport for essential travel - largely work and school - while new guidance is set to limit the size of weddings and funerals to just close family and friends.

Testing will continue to be ramped up.

The new restrictions will come into force at midnight - Friday into Saturday.
