Why Graeme McDowell is not at Masters 2019 despite PGA Tour win

Graeme McDowell has revived his career in recent weeks after admitting he went through "a rough few years".

The Northern Irishman ended a four-year winless drought as he claimed the Corales Puntacana Resort and Club Championship in the Dominican Republic two weeks ago.

The former U.S. Open champion then followed that success up with a T7 at the Valero Texas Open last week.

But he won't be teeing it up at The Masters this week and will miss the tournament for the third year in a row after eight straight appearances from 2009-2016.

A win on the PGA Tour would usually grant you an exemption to all four Majors that season, including The Masters, but that's not the case for G-Mac.

His win did not come with that perk as the event was contested by players who did not qualify for the WGC Match Play, which was played during the same week.

McDowell went into the Valero knowing he needed to win two titles on the spin to qualify for the first Major of the season but came up short despite a valiant effort.

His world ranking wasn't high enough for him to qualify for The Masters either. The win takes him from 257 to inside the top 150 but only the top 50 ranked players are guaranteed a place in the field.

Speaking after the Valero Open in Texas, he expalined:."When you bogey the first any expectation go out the window and you just go for it," said McDowell. "I've got a big three or four months ahead of me, I'm hoping winning last week is going to be a springboard to bounce forward.

"The relief of (winning) last week took its toll on me a bit more than I thought it would but I've a week off now where I'll watch a bit of the Masters, hit the reset button now and go from there."
