Why Gordon Strachan always played 'incredible' Aiden McGeady - despite the arguments

Former Celtic and Scotland manager Gordon Strachan has admitted he had his fair share of arguments with Aiden McGeady - but kept playing him 'because I'm not daft'.

The Sunderland winger is currently on loan at Charlton Athletic having fallen out of favour under Phil Parkinson at the back end of 2019.

While McGeady was always a key player for the Black Cats - he scored six times in red-and-white this term and both the goals in lasr season's Checkatrade Trophy Final - Parkinson has opted for a different style, and allowed the Republic of Ireland man to join Lee Bowyer's Championship side.

However Strachan, who managed McGeady while at Celtic, has picked the 34-year-old in his best-ever Celtic side, and explained why he was such a big fan.

“He’s got incredible ability and worked so hard. He could play anywhere in attack," he told the Scottish Sun.

"I remember playing him up top in a League Cup final against Rangers. We won 2-0 and he was terrific.

“Jesus, we had a lot of arguments - but I kept playing him because I’m not daft.

“He had incredible ability to beat people and, on his day, can look really terrific - as people will have seen in the TV documentary ‘Sunderland ‘Til I Die’.”

McGeady has played three times for Charlton since his January loan switch.
