Why Glasgow Live Sport is joining the social media boycott to stop online hate

It's an issue which is now so depressingly common it's easy to let it pass by.

But not for those on the receiving end, who must deal every day with the kind of sickening abuse that has no place in football and wider society.

And that's why the national game is coming together to make a stand against online hate.

From 3pm on Friday, April 30 until midnight on Monday, May 3, football clubs the length and breadth of the UK will so silent on social media.

We here at Glasgow Live are proud to join them.

Our social media accounts, too, will fall silent this weekend. We stand with football against hate.

Our coverage of football in Glasgow this season has unfortunately dealt with such issues and most recently with the racist abuse of Rangers midfielder Glen Kamara.

The vile incident during the club's Europa League clash with Slavia Prague brought together a city which is often far too divided in football terms.

The sight of Celtic captain Scott Brown embracing Kamara just days after the incident in a show of solidarity will live long in the memory of a season that was already unlike no other.

But there is still much to do with incidents of racism, sectarianism and all forms of hate still far too common in Scottish football.

It's why we're standing with clubs up and down the country this weekend to help put an end to it for good.
