Why Georgia TE Darnell Washington Fell in NFL Draft, per Report

As Day 2 of the NFL draft winds down, the biggest name that fell was Georgia’s Darnell Washington. The Steelers selected Washington with pick No. 93 well after he was expected to go.

The 6’ 7”, 264-pound tight end entered the day as one of the best players available after Round 1, but he lasted deep into the third round. He will now join his former Georgia teammate Broderick Jones in Pittsburgh.

According to Aaron Wilson of KPRC-TV in Houston, teams had high grades on Washington, but the 21 year-old is dealing with a knee injury that contributed to his fall.

Washington spent the past three seasons at Georgia and flashed despite not having gaudy numbers. After two years with under 200 receiving yards, Washington totaled 454 yards and two touchdowns in 2022, and spent the season behind sophomore star Brock Bowers on the tight end depth chart.

After Dalton Kincaid was the lone tight end drafted in the first round, six more tight ends were selected during Day 2 before Pittsburgh picked Washington. Since this is considered to be a deep tight end class, teams apparently felt comfortable with other options at the position over Washington.
