Why George Lee is not fronting RTE News' COP26 coverage this week

RTE's Environment Correspondent George Lee will not travel to Glasgow this week to cover COP26.

The journalist was forced to take a work break after undergoing an emergency operation on his back.

Taking to Twitter, Mr Lee said he is 'enormously grateful to wonderful surgeons' after he underwent surgery last week.

Mr Lee had hoped to report from the Conference of the Parties (COPs) this year, which is an annual summit that aims to devise a plan to get runaway climate change under control.

In a statement on Twitter, he said: "Unfortunately I am unable to travel to Glasgow to report from the COP26 Climate Conference starting this weekend. Had emergency back surgery last week.

RTE's Northern Correspondent Conor Macauley has taken Mr Lee's place over in Glasgow as he reports on the events of the summit.

Wishing Mr Macauley all the best, Mr Lee said: "Very best wishes to RTE Northern Correspondent Conor Macauley who has been drafted in at short notice to replace me at #COP26".

Colleagues were quick to wish Mr Lee all the best in his recovery as they look forward to his return to the office.

RTE's Miriam O'Callaghan said: "Sorry to hear this George – mind yourself, rest lots, get better and hopefully see you very soon x".

Virgin Media News Correspondent Richard Chambers also wished George a fast recovery saying: "Hope you're ok George – and speedy recovery to you!"

Zara King, also a News Correspondent for Virgin Media also wished Mr Lee a quick recovery.

She said: "Aw George, wishing you a speedy recovery. Hope you're doing alright. Look forward to seeing you back on the road again soon."

It is currently unknown when Mr Lee will be able to return to work.
