Why Geordies will love Gary Lineker's reaction to Spain's opener v Switzerland

As Jordi Alba opened the scoring for Spain against Switzerland, Gary Lineker saw an opportunity to tweet some banter in the direction of his BBC Match of the Day colleague Alan Shearer.

The pair weren't on MOTD duty at the time as ITV were hosting the first quarter-final of Euro 2020.

But Shearer and Lineker were together later to present the second quarter-final match: Belgium v Italy.

Two minutes after Alba's deflected opener, Lineker posted his quip on Twitter.

And his followers were lapping up his latest dad gag.

However, the goal was later credited to Switzerland's defensive midfielder Denis Zakaria off whom Alba's strike took a sizable deflection.

So perhaps the joke is on Lineker!

Shearer replied half an hour later with the nerd face emoji, while other replies were... mixed.

@BrettFabian2: Gary, proper Dad joke that!

@stevejs1968: Taxi for Lineker!!

@Margaret__38: At least there’s another Jordi playing in the Euros

Before @TopToon99 pointed out: "Andy Carroll scored in euro 2012 against Sweden".

Spain would go on to win the tie on penalties, with Fabian Schar missing Switzerland's second from the spot.
