On 18 June, 1940, General Charles de Gaulle appealed to the French to rally behind him and refuse collaboration with Nazi Germany. Eighty-six years later he's back in the spotlight thanks to the blockbuster biopic La Bataille de Gaulle. Historian Julian Jackson – whose acclaimed biography, A Certain Idea of France, inspired the film – says De Gaulle had a kind of planetary vision.
