Why Gary Neville wants 'horrible' Leeds United back in the Premier League

Former Manchester United defender Gary Neville has recalled the intimidating atmosphere his side used to face at Elland Road as he explained why he wants to see Leeds United back in the Premier League.

Marcelo Bielsa's side have been out of the top flight since their 2004 relegation and were well placed to end their exile before the season was suspended, sitting top of the Championship table with just nine matches remaining.

The two cross-Pennine foes have been bitter rivals for generations of football fans and Neville says that playing at Elland Road was a unique experience.

"Leeds United are a massive football club," he said on Sky Sports News. "

Fans were horrible to be honest when we used to go there. For United it was just as bad as it gets but the rivalry was a big one, a huge one.

"I want to see them back in the Premier League because I do think football is about rivalry, it's about competition, it's about that spirit between fans."

Neville also touched on the decline of Yorkshire football in recent years, with Sheffield United the only current Premier League representatives from God's Own Country.

"I think that there was a period a couple of years ago where we didn't have any Yorkshire representatives in the Premier League and I think it's a huge loss," he continued.

"When I think of Sheffield Wednesday, Sheffield United, who are obviously back in the Premier League and done brilliantly this season, Hull, Bradford, Barnsley and Leeds United."

Leeds' promotion hopes remain in limbo as they await the authorities next move amid the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.
