Why Gary Lineker was unable to present BT Sport's coverage of PSG vs Man City semi-final

Fans tuning into BT Sport to see Manchester City's Champions League semi-final against PSG may have been slightly surprised to see Jake Humphrey presenting.

Whilst Humphrey is a regular face on BT Sport, hosting both Premier League and Europa League games, Gary Lineker usually presents the broadcaster's flagship Champions League coverage.

Yet Lineker was absent from the coverage of City's Champions League semi-final first leg, with Humphrey stepping in as a late replacement after it was revealed a member of BT's staff had tested positive for Covid-19 after working in the studio during Tuesday's game between Chelsea and Real Madrid.

Despite BT following social distancing guidelines, the decision was taken to replace anyone from Tuesday's panel in order to be cautious over the health of others.

"Massively disappointed not to be on BT Sport tonight for such a great game," Lineker said on Twitter. "A late shout after a positive Covid test to an important member of our team.

"Obeyed our strict social distancing guidelines but it was decided to be ultra-cautious and get tested before returning to work."

It meant Humphrey hosted alongside a panel of former City players Joe Hart, Joleon Lescott and Owen Hargreaves, and the presenter said it was a case of being safe rather than sorry.

He said: "There is no Gary Lineker tonight because unfortunately, one of the team from last night has today had a positive Covid test result.

"So, as a precaution and despite none of our strict social distancing and guidelines being breached, we have decided that no one from yesterday’s show can return until they’ve been tested and it’s completely safe to do so.

"You should have seen the look of disappointment on the faces of these three when I walked into the building, rather than Gary this evening."
